Below are self-assessment tools for you to use.   There is a brief description with a link to each one.   Remember, if you suspect you have a sleep problem, or these questionnaires indicate that you may, it is best make an appointment with a physician for evaluation and treatment.   These questionnaires in themselves do not constitute medical evaluation or advice.


Not only adults, but children too can get behind on their sleep.   It is estimated that many Americans have a “sleep debt” in that they are hours behind on their sleep.   This can have wide-ranging effects on health and performance which have been discussed elsewhere on this site.   To figure out your sleep debt, first think of a time that you felt terrific, and remember how much sleep you had gotten on the nights before.   Then click on this link to complete the Sleep Debt Calculator.   How many nights would you have to sleep extra to “catch up”?     http://www.alertnesssolutions.com/Resources_Info/Exercises/slp_debt_exer.pdf


As children go through puberty their circadian rhythm, or “body clock,” can shift, causing them to go to sleep and rise later in the day.   People who struggle with insomnia may also have a circadian rhythm disorder.   People who are on these later schedules are called “Owls”.   On the other end of the scale, there are also people who get up and go to bed much earlier, call “Larks”.   Which are you, an Owl or a Lark?     http://www.doctoredlund.com/bcq.html
